Item of Interest Number 3

The Website of Pete and Pete

Does anyone remember when the Sci-Fi network used to be cool? I used to be able to leave it on for hours and hours and not get sick of it. They had great shows like Sightings, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Friday the 13th the Series, and Quantum Leap. Now they have Farscape, Star Trek, Stargate, and Star-Star-Star. Sure, they show Quantum Leap every third Wednesday of every fifth month in which the first Friday falls on an even day, but how does that help? I saw a MST:3K repeat twice in the past six months, and both of those were due to happenstance. There's no predictability to their schedule. I mean, they need to restructure. They're losing viewers so they do what? They create another lame original series or two. They need to bring back some of the old-school stuff. Somebody needs to. Things like 'Tales from the Crypt' and 'VR5'. Also, they can start picking up cancelled shows from the past and making new episodes. Not, like, series type stuff, but story oriented things like like 'Night visions' and 'Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction'. That would be cool. Man, I need tons of money or control of a major network. I know what my fellow obscurists want. Sure, the fact that there are a very, very limited number of obscurists in the world comes in to play, but I think we deserve to have at least something besides the fancy title, the odd looks from the 'normal' people of society, and the constant hearing of "You actually like that!?"...

Ok, so if you're anyone outside of the people I interact with on a mostly-daily basis, you probably aren't familiar with Obscurism. I would think not, since I invented it. Well, not 'invented' it, because it's a lifestyle, so it sort of already existed, I just gave it a name and rules and I tell people that I invented it. Well, it was based on stuff I do, so I guess I deserve as much credit as anybody. Yeah...

Item of Interest Number 2

"Doc" Holliday

I have gathered from interactions with people and reading reviews and whatnot that I seem to be of a very select few that 'get' what Travis Morrison is doing on the Travistan album. I am of an even more select few that actually enjoy it. Most Plan fans are quite angry at him. I hope he's quite angry at most Plan fans. The ones I talked to were all expecting to hear a recreation of the D-Plan. Instead, it's a more 'folky', minimalist approach. Not to say there's not a ton of stuff going on here, but he was right to say it compares to The Beatles 'White Album': it's a departure. One most Plan fans didn't want to take. Cries of "He butchered 'Born in 72'!" were quite common when he released the MP3 on his site about a year ago. "I hope this isn't what his album is going to be like..." was another one. Well, it wasn't. It didn't seem to help that the rest of the album is different, though, because as a whole, the album is 'different'. I'm sure many Plan fans herald "Change" (a nod to the last new D-Plan album of the same name, most likely) as a sign that he's 'still got it', it being that Plan vibe. I think that's a bit misleading. I personally think that song was either intentionally written as an 'homage' or it was written shortly after the end of The Plan. Sure, he's still got what made The Plan so unique, but come on, we know he burnt himself out on it. It's not like the Plan 'broke-up' because of in-fights or bad blood, they just exhausted their avenue. It happens. He's not going to be putting out much Plan like stuff because he's most likely sick of it. He's not 'moving on' so much as he 'already has moved on'. He's not intentionally straying from sounding like The Plan, he just doesn't. I understand that it's hard to accept, because it means that The Plan really is 'over', but that's how it is. You have to let go. Admonishing him because he has the ability to move on isn't going to get you anywhere...

Ok, so most of these links are broken, sue me. I'd remove them but I like them being there...
